The Challenge :

“Help dentistry resume invasive aerosol generating procedures while safeguarding infection control even if a patient maybe Covid 19 suspect”

Statement of requirement :

This hackathon is seeking a Digital Manufacturing Method for initial prototyping stage to establish proof of concept  while having a clear transition path to mass production techniques.

Teams of 2 to 5 persons can apply for this hackathon.  The team should have a dentist as a mandatory member participating and advising in the innovation as it is shaped by the applicant team.

It is a well known fact that dentsist who handled 10 to 20 patients per day have been handling less than 5 or 6 per days as an average in the past few months. This hackathon is seeking Digital manufacturing experts and their associated dentist to come up with ideas on producing commonly required examination and procedural instruments.

Outcomes of this hackathon should help Dentists resume all procedures for patient care while safeguarding care givers, patient and subsequent patients seeking treatment in the same clinic by making aerosol generating procedures SAFE even while a patient maybe Covid 19 suspect.

To broad base the speedier acceptance of the outcome of this challenge the local chapters of Dentists Association have been identified. This connect between an entire state’s user community of dentists and Digital Manufacturing Hackers is never before opportunity. Dentists have discouraged people needing procedures ecept when there were emergencies. Dentistry needs to resume its full operations and help patients regain lost dental health. This has to be done without burdening patients with additional costs and longer procedure times.

Problem to be addressed :

Many dental procedures require invasive work which are bound to generate aerosols. Containing aerosols and severely limiting potential exposure to a Covid 19 infected aerosol is the KEY DELIVERABLE for this HACKATHON.

Key outcomes and related capabilities :  Establish proof of concept for rapid and integrated Digital manufacturing with focus  for rapid design to Digital production of infection control devices such as Rubber dam with clamp; Long handle examination mirror tool, Multi ended filling instrument, etc..  

Outcomes expected :

1. Innovations of modified instruments suited for Covid 19 like pandemic including
   1. Longer handles – increase distance between dentist and patient
   2. Easy to apply guides – aiding faster completion of procedure
   3. Design idea to prototype within 30 days – tool less production from digital design
   4. One time use and throw for patients with risk and sterilisable for patients with low risk
   5. Validated transition to mass production – for cost efficiencies and rapid scaling
2. Parametric based configurability for size variations of base design
3. Innovative approach for antiviral and/or antibacterial coating on dental device

Desired Solution Capabilities to be submitted in response to challenge :

1. Idea and concepts establishing approach taken –  3D Models, 2D Design ideas, CAD drawings
2. Design should cover the following aspects
   1. Materials to be used for digital manufacturing – ensure check for biocompatibility, cytotoxicity
   2. Digital Manufacturing technology used – Rapid Prototyping Machine, 3D Printing using FDM, SLA or similar
   3. Confirm ability to prototype if shortlisted at no own cost

Shortlisted finalists will be given 30 days time to complete their prototype and vie for the hackathon award
